Honey Bucket uses video to win exonerations Honey Bucket is a division of Northwest Cascade Inc. The company provides portable toilets, temporary fences, and other services to construction sites, homes, and special events. They ensure the cleanest, safest, and most convenient service in their industry.

Matt Smith, Honey Bucket’s Operations Manager for Washington, has seen the company evolve from the CB radios of years past to advanced fleet solutions. As he describes it, the discontinuation of 3G technology and having to pay out, research, or exonerate claims of site damage from customers was a catalyst for Honey Bucket to modernize its systems. Honey Bucket was looking for GPS fleet tracking and video solutions to help address these issues.

In 2017, Honey Bucket rolled out Lytx® Risk Detection Service to all locations. After successfully leveraging the solutions and seeing significant safety and operational benefits, Honey Bucket upgraded to Lytx’s comprehensive video telematics and video safety system in 2019.

Using Video to Solve Service Issues and Reduce False Claims

Honey Bucket drivers are often the first to receive blame when mystery damage appears at a work site. Before implementing Lytx video solutions, Honey Bucket would have to send employees to investigate and resolve the issue.

Now, video can clearly show what happened, helping to reduce back and-forth negotiations and accelerating resolutions. This saves Honey Bucket’s time, money, and reputation.

Video has also been instrumental in proving what happened during roadway collisions. In one example, a Honey Bucket vehicle was side swiped by another driver, causing a collision that released a sewage spill on the freeway and triggered an environmental incident. Honey Bucket could have been potentially facing a lawsuit for unsafe driving that caused a hazardous spill. Instead, because they were proactive and had video footage to use for exoneration, the Washington State Patrol and Washington Department of Transportation commended Honey Bucket for its quick action and professional response.

Decreasing Risk, Leveraging Data, and Improving Maintenance

In addition to getting visibility into accidents and damage with video, Honey Bucket has used Lytx solutions to improve safety and operations in multiple ways.

In-cab alerts powered by machine vision and artificial intelligence (MV+AI) help drivers self-correct in the moment for specific risky behaviors that Honey Bucket wants to mitigate. Honey Bucket was able to configure settings to their organization needs and preferences and their managers can then view reports on scorable events to analyze how drivers and the company overall are progressing toward targeted risk reductions. Honey Bucket’s leaders receive these safety reports and trends to help them decide when and how to coach drivers.

Another benefit of investing in video telematics is the ability to automate odometer readings, which integrate Honey Bucket’s repair and maintenance system. Previously, drivers were self-reporting odometer numbers, which meant mileage wasn’t always accurate and vehicles weren’t being serviced as promptly as possible. With the process automated, the company ensures its equipment is well-maintained.

Finally, the Lytx fleet tracking solution with advanced GPS helps Honey Bucket’s dispatchers find the closest person to get the job done. This helps improve customer service and the dispatch data. It also simplifies reporting to the International Freight Association (IFA) regarding vehicle classifications and cargo, as well as minimizing mileage by reducing drive time when possible.

    Adressing Driver Concerns

Drivers often worry about having video in their cabs, which can be one of the biggest barriers to overcome when adopting a solution like Lytx. To help alleviate driver concerns about privacy, Honey Bucket is upfront about what the dash cameras are used for, starting on the first day of training. The company emphasizes that video is used to investigate incidents and help protect drivers, not “catch them doing something wrong.” Additionally, only regional managers have access to the footage, so drivers can be confident that every clip is secure and viewed only by those who need to see it.

Honey Bucket’s strategic adoption of Lytx video telematics has not only modernized their operations, but has also significantly enhanced safety and efficiency across their fleet. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the company has reduced traffic violations and improved maintenance scheduling, all while helping to protect their drivers and reputation. As they continue to embrace innovation in service delivery, Honey Bucket stands as a testament to how technology can transform operational challenges into opportunities for growth and excellence.
